Yet Another Example of Rip-Off Britain

Well, we’re alive.
Alive and pretty angry.

But what is so bad it has upset the Fluffies you ask?

Introducing the new Canon EOS 50D 15.1MP Digital SLR
And what a beauty she is!

US price for body only: $1,399.95 US Dollars on Amazon.com

At today’s exchange rate, this makes the equivalent UK price £796 uk pounds sterling. Woo hoo! A bit tight for the budget, but do-able I guess.

Now let’s see if we can find it on Amazon in the UK.

UK price for body only: £1,199.99 uk pounds sterling on Amazon.co.uk (equivalent US price $2,110 US Dollars)

Why is it we live here again?

There's a reason my sis-in-law flies back (Minnesota) once a year, besides visiting her mother. She buys more luggage and goes shopping!!!!

Would really love to go to the 50D myself but my 40D is only 8 months old, no way I can justify it.

My sympathies, but how much of that is due to the VAT? Since I suspect the VAT is included in your calculations, you need to add 7-8% (usually) for the equivalent U.S. state Sales Tax to the U.S. prices. That can be avoided by ordering from an out-of-state shipper, but most states then require you to pay a "use" tax that is the same amount, although I'm sure 90% of people don't even know it applies, and a substantial number of those who do know of it don't declare and pay it.

Why would you want that camera? For the 15+ megapixels? Whoop-dee-doo! It ain't all about megapixels. This camera isn't a next generation piece of technology. It's a 40D with a couple of additions. Live view? (yawn) Face regognition? (yawn again.) IT STILL HAS AN UNDERSIZED SENSOR!!!!

If you want to upgrade, buy a 5D, used or new. Or, start saving your money for the next FULL-FRAME SENSOR model that is sure to be coming down the tube.

If you're itching to spend some money, spend it on something that will actually IMPROVE the images from the camera you're already shooting with: Buy some really good glass!

Well... if you live in the US, and you have relatives in Europe, you get LOTSA requests from people you didn't even think you knew, to have stuff shipped to your house, which then has to be shipped over to Europe, and believe me, it's a pain.. LOL.

I feel your pain, but the US isn't all that great unless you have a great job with good benefits and health insurance.

It seems Nikon's prices are more reasonable in this respect, not so great an Atlantic difference on the D90.

Anyway, I use MyUS.com, which takes US shipments and send it off too you. They will even make an invoice with netto value of the item, so your import tax is minimized.

This may also take the pressure off Iris.
